Lonely Planet Ranks Dunedin
Amongst Best In The World

The reputable guide book Lonely Planet recently named Dunedin in three top ten lists in the Best in Travel 2010.

Whilst New Zealand was ranked in the top ten countries to visit in 2010 Dunedin was the only region to feature outside of the country’s chapter.

The South Island coastal town was ranked number one destination in the world for super cycling routes.

“The mix of scenery and sweat make this one of the best one day rides,” the guide book says.

The route begins in the historical city and winds its way along the Otago Peninsula.

The Otago Peninsula is highlighted along with Antarctica, Ecuador and The Rift Valley in Kenya as one of the top destinations for twitchers.

“This wildlife region has become one of New Zealand’s hottest attractions, and its main draw card is birdlife,” the guide explains.

The Otago Peninsula is home to the world’s only mainland albatross breeding colony and arguably the world's rarest penguin - the yellow eyed penguin.

Finally, Dunedin ranks in the top ten places to walk your dog in the world.

Lonely Planet describes the dog friendly trails that surround the city leading towards the sea.

Other destinations in the top ten include Los Angeles, Paris and Tokyo.

“We challenge all Australians to pay Dunedin a visit and experience exactly what Lonely Planet is raving about," said Hamish Saxton, Chief Executive Officer of Tourism Dunedin.

"Australians not only have one of the world’s best destinations at their doorstep they are as little as 3-hours away from the world’s best cycling, walking and wildlife,” said Saxton.
