IN SEARCH OF MYTHS & HEROES
BBC DVD
Filmmaker/journalist Michael Wood presents four programs under the subject of myths and heroes in this series recently screened on ABC TV in Australia.
Each program of the In Search of Myths & Heroes 2-disk package deals with a mythological character that may, or may not, be based on a real person involved in actual historical events that have been preserved in story, song and folklore.
His quest for evidence of these people and the places they inhabited takes him from Jerusalem to Ethiopia to Yemen (The Queen of Sheba) India, Nepal and Tibet (Shangri-La) Greece and the Balkans (Jason and the Golden Fleece) and finally France and the British Isles (Arthur the Once & Future King).
Part historical quest and part travelogue, In Search of Myths & Heroes visits some stunning landscapes, deserted villages, lonely castles and ruined monasteries. Michael Wood chats to local inhabitants who have preserved folk memories of these mythical people and places.
The result is documentary film making at its very best. The high quality is nothing less than we've come to expect from Wood who wrote the series in addition to being our on-camera guide.
